A total of fifty five horses have been entered for the Betfred Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter Racecourse on Saturday 18 March. The centrepiece of the Staffordshire racecourse’s race programme, run over 4m 1½ furlongs and worth £125,000, has attracted some of the top staying steeplechasers from across Britain and Ireland.
The entries are headed by Alan King’s 2015 Paddy Power Gold Cup winner Annacotty, along with Anthony Honeyball’s Regal Encore, winner of Ascot’s Listed Silver Cup in December. Another interesting entry is Mark Bradstock’s Flintham, a half-brother to Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Coneygree and full brother to Hennessy Gold Cup winner Carruthers. Flintham was most recently seen coming a close second in the Grade Two Reynoldstown Novice Chase at Ascot.
Previous winners of the race Firebird Flyer (2016) and Goulanes (2014) both receive an entry from trainers Evan Williams and Neil Mulholland. Trainer Michael Scudamore has enjoyed success in long distance chases this season, and enters Newcastle Racecourse’s Eider Chase winner Mysteree as well as Kingswell Theatre, winner of the Devon National at Exeter.
Trainer David Pipe has a fantastic record in the race, having won four times in a row between 2011 and 2014, and has entered a total of five this year, with the same number of horses entered from trainers based in Ireland.
Racing from Uttoxeter will be broadcast by ITV Racing, with four races, including the Betfred Midlands Grand National.
Uttoxeter Racecourse’s Executive Director David MacDonald commented, “We’re really pleased with the entries for the Betfred Midlands Grand National this year. Again, we have some quality horses entered and can be assured of a big field for this competitive and compelling race”
“We have plenty of entertainment planned for our feature day, which is always a popular event both locally and within the racing world. This year, we have firm favourites Mr Wilson’s Second Liners, well as street entertainers Granny Turismo and local band The Formula who will all entertain the crowds before racing. We’re looking forward to a fantastic day, as well Uttoxeter making its debut on ITV Racing.”
